Carbon dioxide is considered to have the greatest impact on global warming and climate change. The development of carbon capture technology is seen as an effective way to alleviate these major problems, and the development of porous adsorbents based on high specific surface area, high pore volume, and high adsorption desorption rates remains a challenging task. Nanocarbon materials have been widely studied due to their excellent CO2 adsorption performance. Among these nanomaterials, graphene oxide (GO) has a high specific surface area, low cost alternative, and adjustable surface chemical properties, which can be used for low-temperature CO2 capture. The three-dimensional (3D) porous gas gel obtained by reducing graphene oxide (rGO) is considered as a promising carbon dioxide capture adsorbent due to its low density, interconnected porous network, large surface area and active sites.
Small or large molecules containing amino groups chemically modify the epoxides and carboxyl groups in graphene oxide to adjust their surface chemical properties and improve adsorption performance. In this regard, polyamide amine (PAMAM) dendrimers have attracted people's interest because they are non-volatile molecules with high-density functional amine end groups and large surface area, providing more active sites. The number of functional groups on the surface of PAMAM dendrimers increases exponentially with the generation of dendrimers (G). Due to its relatively low production cost, biodegradability, and unique structural properties such as surface chemistry, controllable size and structure, hydrophilicity, and chemical stability, PAMAM dendrimers have promising applications in electrochemical sensing or adsorption applications.
The partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO) aerogel gel was modified with PAMAM dendrimer by hydrothermal freezing casting method. The effects of different conditions, such as the generation of dendrimers, the weight ratio of GO: PAMAM, solvothermal temperature, freezing casting rate and so on, on the properties of modified aerogels were studied. The aerogels were characterized by SEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that the synthesis conditions had a strong correlation with the N content, N/C ratio, and the role of nitrogen in the modified aerogel; The aerogels modified by low GO: PAMAM (2:0.1mg mL-1) ratio and high generation PAMAM (G7) have the best CO2 adsorption performance at higher solvothermal temperature and liquid nitrogen. This study reported a feasible method of modifying graphene aerogel to improve CO2 capture.
