Science and Technology Daily (Reporter Liu Xia) Scientists from Sweden's Lin Xueping University published research on the latest issue of Advanced Science magazine, showing a new type of aerogel made of cellulose and conductive polymer. This aerogel can adjust the high-frequency terahertz light passing through it, bringing new application possibilities for medical imaging, communication and other fields.
Terahertz waves, located between microwave and infrared light in the electromagnetic spectrum, are of great concern due to their high frequency. Its enormous application potential in space exploration, security technology, communication systems, and medical imaging has been widely recognized. Especially in the field of medical imaging, terahertz waves are expected to become a substitute for X-rays, as they can penetrate most non-conductive materials without damaging tissues. However, before terahertz waves can be widely used, two technical challenges need to be overcome: an effective generation method and tunable transmission materials.
In order to overcome these challenges, scientists from Lin Xueping University made a new type of aerogel using conductive polymer PEDOT: PSS and cellulose. The reason for choosing these two materials is due to their unique advantages: conductive polymers have biocompatibility, durability, and good tuning ability; Cellulose, on the other hand, is a low-cost, renewable key material. In addition, during the design process, the research team also endowed the aerogel with the characteristics of waterproof and natural thawing heated by sunlight to meet the needs of outdoor applications.
The results show that the aerogel can adjust the absorption of terahertz light through a simple redox reaction. This characteristic makes the aerogel can be used as a tunable filter of terahertz light, and the absorption of terahertz signal can be turned on or off according to the demand. This is of great significance for receiving long-range signals or radar signals from space.
