Vapor phase silicon dioxide is one of the earliest inorganic nano powder materials to realize industrial production. With its superior stability, reinforcement, thickening and thixotropy, it is widely used in silicone rubber, adhesives, paint coatings, inks and copier toner, unsaturated polyester resin and composite materials. It is an urgently needed and indispensable raw material in the national high-tech field and the national defense industry. However, the surface of non hydrophobic modified fumed silica contains a large number of hydroxyl and polar groups, and its primary particles are prone to collide with each other to form aggregates, which affects its dispersibility in organic polymers and limits its application range. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out targeted surface treatment on gas-phase silica to change its hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity, thereby improving its wettability, dispersion, interface bonding strength with organic molecules, and enhancing the overall performance of the material.

In recent years, with the continuous changes in market demand, a fumed silica product with both low thickening and high reinforcement performance has become a new application hotspot in industries such as silicone rubber. In order to achieve product functionality, the laboratory used hydrophilic silica as raw material and treated the surface of hydrophilic silica through chemical and physical dual modification. A modified silica with good hydrophobicity, low thickening effect, and reinforcement performance was prepared.
Firstly, structurally, the microstructure of unmodified fumed silica is a primitive porous structure, the overall structure becomes flat and dense.

Secondly, in terms of contact angle, unmodified fumed silica has good hydrophilicity, while modified has good hydrophobicity. Through actual measurement experiments, the contact angle changed from 26.6 ° to 125.9 °, and the hydrophobicity effect was significantly improved.

In addition, changes in properties can bring significant changes to its function. after surface chemical treatment and structural modification, still has the basic characteristics of fumed silica and can exhibit specificity that other conventional fumed silica does not have. While continuously increasing the amount added, the good reinforcement effect is constantly enhanced, but the viscosity of the system does not change significantly. Other comprehensive properties still perform excellently.
